Schematic diagram of the rat model for colorectal distention (CRD) stimulation and electro-acupuncture (EA) treatment (revised according to Wang and Li [25]). Stimulation of colorectal distention was achieved by inserting a distensible balloon into the colorectum and injecting a volume of air into the balloon to maintain a pressure of 20, 40, 60 and 80 mmHg, respectively. For EA treatment, two pair of needles were inserted into two acupoints [ST-36 (Zu-san-li acupoint) and ST-37 (Shang-ju-xu acupoint)] on both hind limbs. Electric stimuli were applied to the needles with disperse-dense waves at strengths and times ranging from 5 Hz for 5 s to 25 Hz for 10 s alternately in frequency and 1 mA in intensity, for a total treatment time of 30 min.
