Experimental procedure used in this study. After a 5-day-adaptation period, the rats were randomly divided into the clenbuterol-administered group and the control group. Clenbuterol (dose = 1.0 mg/kg body weight/day) was administered to the cervical portion of the back by subcutaneous (s.c.) injection (8:00–8:30) for ten consecutive days. In the control group rats, an equivalent volume of 0.9% NaCl solution was administered in the same manner. Skeletal muscles were isolated and weighed on the day after the final day of clenbuterol administration
