Effect of RU486 (mifepristone; a non-selective glucocorticoid receptor antagonist) pretreatment on changes in serum corticosterone, glucose, Trp, and Kyn levels in rats subjected (WIRS) or not (Control) to 6 h of WIRS. Rats in the WIRS group were injected intraperitoneally with either RU486 (WIRS + RU486; 20 mg/kg body weight) or vehicle (WIRS; 0.5 % Tween 80) at 0.5 h before the onset of the WIRS treatment. Rats in the Control group were injected intraperitoneally with vehicle in the same manner and at the same time point. Serum corticosterone, glucose, Trp, and Kyn levels in each group were determined using the assays described in the Materials and methods. Each value is the mean ± SD (n = 7 Control rats; n = 8 WIRS rats; n = 8 WIRS + RU486 rats). *P < 0.05 (vs. Control rats); # P < 0.05 (vs. +WIRS rats without RU486 pretreatment)
