Muscle length is normalized with respect to the length at which active force is maximal for each type of muscle. The length dependence of activation is more pronounced in cardiac muscle than in skeletal muscle in the physiological length range (i.e., 80–100 %) [e.g., 40]. It has been reported that the slope of the length dependency is less steep in the myocardium of failing hearts (solid gray line) [e.g., 67, 68]
