Longitudinal section of the growth plate (epiphyseal plate) of the proximal tibial metaphysis. The growth plate separates the epiphysis from the metaphysis, and is important for endochondral bone formation. The growth plate is divided into reserve zone (RZ), proliferative zone (PZ) and the hypertrophic zone (HZ), which is next by the primary spongiosa (PS)—the initial trabecular network formed after vascular invasion and matrix calcification (hematoxylin–eosin staining; scale bar 30 μm)
